LAS TERRENAS

You can pretty much kitesurf everywhere around Las Terrenas. There are 2 main spots for beginners, Punta Popy and Punta Portillo. 

Playa Coson is for wave riders when the wind kicks in. 

The strongest wind is usually in June, July and August with 20 knots most of the days going up to 25 knots. 

The rest of the year the wind is mostly blowing around 15 knots going up to 20 knots.

The water is always warm, it is perfect for swimming all year long. 

Most of the people kitesurf and surf without any wetsuit, but if you like very long sessions we recommend bringing a shorty wetsuit just in case.

The coldest month is January with 20 to 27 degrees.

The warmest month is September 23 to 31 degrees.

The water is generally flat. 

If the wind is more than 20 knots the water can get a bit choppy. 

There is also one spot with perfect breaking waves for advanced riders in Playa Coson.

The closest international airport is Santo Domingo Las Americas airport (SDQ), it is a 2h drive from Las Terrenas. 

There is also El Catey airport, which is 20 minutes from Las Terrenas with mostly americans and canadians fligths. European flights should be coming soon. 

Punta Cana airport is also an option just note it is a 3h30 drive from Las Terrenas.

A taxi from Santo Domingo airport to Las Terrenas is generally 180$ and is 2h – 2h30.

A taxi from Punta Cana airport to Las Terrenas is generally 350$ and is 3h30 – 4h.

The currency in the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Peso (DOP). That being said, US Dollars are widely accepted. 

You will also find Bitcoin ATM distributors machines in Las Terrenas.

In the Dominican Republic the power supplies are the American type, 110-120V/60Hz. 

If you come from a country which does not have this type of socket as in Europe, you should buy an adaptor to be able to use your electronic devices.

There are mosquitos all year long. You can find efficient sprays against mosquito here in Las Terrenas supermarkets or pharmacies.For more protection we highly recommend to buy a repellent plug in your country and to bring it to the Dominican Republic as you will not find any here to buy.

There are many « moto conchos » in Las Terrenas. Hop on the bike and they will take you anywhere (be aware there are no helmets). 

You can also find classic car drivers which are a bit more expensive.

If you live in the city you will enjoy the nightlife and restaurants to a walking distance. But we recommend to rent at least a bicycle or a scooter (around 20$ per day) or even a small car (around 45$ per day), as there are so many different places to visit.

There is a great night life in LT. You can go out every single night of the week and the week ends are on fire.

There are many cocktail places and 4 to 5 different clubs with DJs visiting from all around the world.

There are so many beaches around, you will never feel the crowd on the beach. 

The streets can get very crowded on the week ends though (especially during Semana Santa).

The main language is Spanish, although you will hear a lot of French, English and Italian due to the expats communities.

Las Terrenas is one of the safest places in the Caribbean regarding hurricanes. The hurricane season is generally in November and October. The hurricanes rarely make any major damages in Las Terrenas as it is protected by the mountains.

Rain is frequent, this is why there is such a lush nature all around. The rain lasts usually for 5 to 10 minutes and the sun comes again. Don’t forget it is a tropical weather.
